Not until the age of 14 did Mathis Calzetta, a native of Grenoble, France, discover the world of classical music. He quickly developed a keen interest, and vocation for piano, conducting, and composing. His unusual path has led him to explore an eclectic musical repertory in diverse ways : as conductor, musical arranger, but also solo pianist, and pianist in orchestra and chamber formations, and accompaniment. He also participates as a pianist in theater performances.

Pianist

As a Pianist, Mathis was admitted to the Grenoble conservatory in September 2012 and studied piano with Sandra Chamoux, piano accompaniment with Sébastian Jaudon. He was influenced by François-Gildas Tual, his professor of analysis. While studying at the conservatory, he also obtained a Bachelor of Musicology from the University of Pierre-Mendès France in Grenoble.
In June 2015, he was awarded the diplomas of musical study and theory at the piano, and composition, with special mention from the jury. At the conservatory of Boulogne Billancourt, he studied in the class of Nicolas Mallarte, and the following year entered the High School of Music in Geneva in the class of Dominique Weber under whom he obtained a Bachelor of musical interpretation three years later.
In November 2020, he was the laureat of the Academy « Musique à la Prée ». In September 2021 he had the privilege of receiving a scholarship from the Ecole Normale in Paris, and studied with Henri Barda for a year.
He has studied with, and received the advice of such major pianists and teachers as Denis Pascal, Pascal Rogé, Michel Béroff, François-René Duchable, Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Hortense Cartier-Bresson and Cédric Pesait.
He has also participated in several theater performances, among which : Joêl Pommerat’s « Ma chambre froide », directed by Jean-Luc Aujard, « Tout un poème » at the Galpon theater in Genève, and more recently, « C’est mervieilleux », directed by Clara Brancorsini.
In June 2019, he was the pianist for the live retransmission of Schoenberg’s « Pierrot Lunaire » with the Swiss Radio-Television.
In February 2020, the musical publisher and formation, Contrechamps, chose him to play Ligeti’s Studies at the Hungarian Institute in Paris.
In March 2023 he will be in residence at the Théâtre de l’Aquarium in Paris for the première of a show, « Le Concert Chopin », directed by Volodia Piotrovitch d’Orlik, in which he interprets Chopin’s second piano concerto with the Drome Chamber Orchestra.

Conductor

From the beginning of his musical studies, Mathis Calzetta was drawn to the art of Conducting. While at the Grenoble conservatory, he created a number of musical formations that he directed on his own initiative, receiving the support and advice of Arnaud Petit.
In September 2018 he began training both at the piano, and as a conductor at the High School of Music in Geneva, in the class of Laurent Gay. In the course of his studies, he was chosen to participate in master classes, and worked with both Domingo Hindoyan, Pietro Veneri, and others.
In January 2019 he founded the Drome Chamber Orchestra with the musician Nicolas Mizen. With this formation whose goal is to promote young talents, and local ones, he performs regularly in diverse programs with a varying number of musicians.
In September 2019 he was invited by the foundation Neemrana, and performed at the Alliance Française of New Delhi in India, as choir director for the foundation’s students.
In July 2021 he participated at the academy « Inventing to learn », organised by the association PAGE. He directed a formation dedicated to promoting the music of the twentieth and twenty first century, and gave first performances of the works of young composers.
In December 2021, he was the production assistant for Richard Strauss’s « Electra » with the Grand Théatre de Genève, under the direction of Jonathan Nott.
In June 2022 he obtained his Master’s degree during a concert at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices in Genève, with the Orchestre des Pays de Savoie.
